Extra-Curricular Activities

In addition to the school curriculum, the staff at Oakwood School work hard to provide a rich and varied extra-curricular program. Some of these activities include:

  • School Trips
  • Forest of Reading
  • Concerts
  • School Teams
  • Makerspace
  • Instrumental Music
  • Chess Club
  • Recycling/Green Club
  • Sharing Assemblies - to recognize positive student achievement
  • Special Days: Dress-Up Days; Spirit Days; Theme Days

School teams participate with neighbouring schools at tournaments.

Fundamental Skills

In September 2002 Oakwood School became new home of the Fundamental Skills Program in Port Colborne. Though reduced in numbers since leaving Humberstone it has a teacher and educational assistants who are well-trained, experienced and caring.

The school has newly renovated classrooms which include therapy, multi-sensory, and health care rooms. Additionally the special needs, wheelchair accessible children's playground, has been rebuilt here. The school has been upgraded with ramps, wider doorways, an automated entrance and a new washroom to accommodate students with special needs.

Many of the students are integrated and supported in regular classrooms. However, we strive to effectively meet the challenging intellectual, physical and emotional needs of all the children in the program.

We feel very welcome in our new home at Oakwood School.
